Vitamin B12 is an essential nutrient that the body cannot make for itself. It has to come from diet or supplementation, and it is found almost entirely in animal products, which is why interest in B12 has grown alongside plant-based eating.
Vitamin B12 contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism, to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, to normal red blood cell formation, to the normal functioning of the nervous system and to normal psychological function.
A B12 injection delivers the vitamin into the muscle, usually in the upper arm. Some people prefer this to oral supplements as a way of topping up their levels.
